Jennifer Gebelein

Dr. Jennifer Gebelein is the Director for Artificial Intelligence (AI) Integration and Faculty Success in the Center for the Advancement of Teaching (CAT) at Florida International University (FIU).  In this role, Dr. Gebelein leads the integration of AI into the institution’s pedagogical practices and curriculum.  Dr. Gebelein provides strategic leadership in the exploration and adoption of AI technologies to introduce and design curricula that incorporate AI, and ensures academic programs are forward-thinking and align with industry trends and FIU’s Strategic Plan. She collaborates with university leadership and other key stakeholders to create a framework outlining appropriate uses of AI in teaching, research, and learning, including addressing ethical considerations, academic integrity, and data privacy. In addition, she oversees the CAT educational technology workgroup with respect to the large-scale signature programs and projects, such as the Hybrid Initiative and other CAT technology focused initiatives including Faculty Feedback and Fundamentals of Online Teaching. 

  

Dr. Gebelein has over 20 years of university leadership experience, from teaching STEM and Humanities courses to higher level administration of programmatic and pedagogic transformations. She is passionate about an individual's success in all learning environments and applying cutting edge approaches to proactively engage, retain and encourage a person's progression and achievement. She has incorporated this work ethic and passion into all her projects. The focus of her recent work has been on the marriage of technology and analytics related to big data trends and patterns for student success initiatives and university-wide projects. 

  

Prior to stepping into her current AI-focused position, Dr. Gebelein was the Director for the Student Success Courses and student engagement of emerging technologies in and out the classroom, and the creation of learning opportunities.  She led the student success team at FIU for over 6 years in that role and those experiences were a catalyst for this textbook. 

Alexa Urra

Alexa Urra serves as the Associate Director of Academic Support Services for Student Success Operations & Strategy (SSOS) at Florida International University (FIU). In this role, she oversees a suite of University Student Success courses, including First Year Experience, Strategies for Success, Discover Your Major, Major & Career Exploration, and Post-Graduation. A proud FIU Panther, Alexa earned her Master of Science in Education, specializing in Adult Education and Human Resource Development, from Florida International University. She is also an alumna of the University of Miami, where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Communication and Public Relations. 

With over a decade of experience in higher education, Alexa is deeply committed to supporting students at every stage of their academic journey—from enrollment to graduation. Her passion lies in teaching and mentoring students to achieve their full potential. Contributing to this textbook has been a significant milestone in Alexa’s career. She hopes it serves as a practical and empowering resource for both current and prospective college students, equipping them with the tools they need to thrive in higher education and beyond! 

 

Pamela Ortiz

Pamela Ortiz serves as a Program Coordinator and Dual Enrollment Liaison/Mentor within Student Success Operations & Strategy (SSOS) at Florida International University (FIU). Since 2011, she has worked in the field of education across a variety of roles, including teaching and administration at both high schools and college levels. Much of her career has focused on higher education, with extensive experience in curriculum development, academic administration and instructional leadership—both in the United States and abroad in the Dominican Republic. Pamela holds a Bachelor of Arts in Humanities with a concentration in History from CUNY City College of New York and a master's degree in Higher Education Administration.  

 

She has worked closely with high school seniors, particularly those from underserved backgrounds, to help them pursue and attain higher education opportunities. As co-author of Thriving in College: Mastering Skills for Student Success, Pamela is able to continue supporting students during their transition from high school to college by helping equip students with strategies and essential academic skills that will empower them to excel. She believes that with the right tools and support, every student has the potential to grow and succeed.

Jennifer Gebelein

Dr. Jennifer Gebelein is the Director for Artificial Intelligence (AI) Integration and Faculty Success in the Center for the Advancement of Teaching (CAT) at Florida International University (FIU).  In this role, Dr. Gebelein leads the integration of AI into the institution’s pedagogical practices and curriculum.  Dr. Gebelein provides strategic leadership in the exploration and adoption of AI technologies to introduce and design curricula that incorporate AI, and ensures academic programs are forward-thinking and align with industry trends and FIU’s Strategic Plan. She collaborates with university leadership and other key stakeholders to create a framework outlining appropriate uses of AI in teaching, research, and learning, including addressing ethical considerations, academic integrity, and data privacy. In addition, she oversees the CAT educational technology workgroup with respect to the large-scale signature programs and projects, such as the Hybrid Initiative and other CAT technology focused initiatives including Faculty Feedback and Fundamentals of Online Teaching. 

  

Dr. Gebelein has over 20 years of university leadership experience, from teaching STEM and Humanities courses to higher level administration of programmatic and pedagogic transformations. She is passionate about an individual's success in all learning environments and applying cutting edge approaches to proactively engage, retain and encourage a person's progression and achievement. She has incorporated this work ethic and passion into all her projects. The focus of her recent work has been on the marriage of technology and analytics related to big data trends and patterns for student success initiatives and university-wide projects. 

  

Prior to stepping into her current AI-focused position, Dr. Gebelein was the Director for the Student Success Courses and student engagement of emerging technologies in and out the classroom, and the creation of learning opportunities.  She led the student success team at FIU for over 6 years in that role and those experiences were a catalyst for this textbook. 

Alexa Urra

Alexa Urra serves as the Associate Director of Academic Support Services for Student Success Operations & Strategy (SSOS) at Florida International University (FIU). In this role, she oversees a suite of University Student Success courses, including First Year Experience, Strategies for Success, Discover Your Major, Major & Career Exploration, and Post-Graduation. A proud FIU Panther, Alexa earned her Master of Science in Education, specializing in Adult Education and Human Resource Development, from Florida International University. She is also an alumna of the University of Miami, where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Communication and Public Relations. 

With over a decade of experience in higher education, Alexa is deeply committed to supporting students at every stage of their academic journey—from enrollment to graduation. Her passion lies in teaching and mentoring students to achieve their full potential. Contributing to this textbook has been a significant milestone in Alexa’s career. She hopes it serves as a practical and empowering resource for both current and prospective college students, equipping them with the tools they need to thrive in higher education and beyond! 

 

Pamela Ortiz

Pamela Ortiz serves as a Program Coordinator and Dual Enrollment Liaison/Mentor within Student Success Operations & Strategy (SSOS) at Florida International University (FIU). Since 2011, she has worked in the field of education across a variety of roles, including teaching and administration at both high schools and college levels. Much of her career has focused on higher education, with extensive experience in curriculum development, academic administration and instructional leadership—both in the United States and abroad in the Dominican Republic. Pamela holds a Bachelor of Arts in Humanities with a concentration in History from CUNY City College of New York and a master's degree in Higher Education Administration.  

 

She has worked closely with high school seniors, particularly those from underserved backgrounds, to help them pursue and attain higher education opportunities. As co-author of Thriving in College: Mastering Skills for Student Success, Pamela is able to continue supporting students during their transition from high school to college by helping equip students with strategies and essential academic skills that will empower them to excel. She believes that with the right tools and support, every student has the potential to grow and succeed.
