Welcome to Understanding Dance: An Immersive Experience. With more than twenty years of experience as an educator in post-secondary institutions, I have taught a wide variety of students, from the reluctant freshman who is just beginning their journey in dance studies, to the graduate student who plans to teach others. Once I decided to write this text, I spent a lot of time thinking about what students should learn and appreciate about dance, both as an art form and as a means to engage with the community. Many dance appreciation texts cover essential concepts while others investigate the functions of dance in society; however, a comprehensive dance appreciation course should examine dance in a multitude of ways. Therefore, Understanding Dance: An Immersive Experience aims to provide students with information about basic concepts -elements of dance, important roles within dance production, choreographic principles- and encourages deeper investigation of the many roles dance plays within society.
