The Voyage of the Sunship follows the unique journey of Dillon Roderick from his native Washington, DC to San Diego, California. After the death of his father and the dissolution of life as he knew it, including the loss of his full academic scholarship, Dillon resolves to leave home to complete his education elsewhere. With its ideal climate and low-cost education, he decides upon San Diego State University. The Voyage of the Sunship chronicles Dillon’s journey to graduation, as his quest to attain a diploma, blends with an evolving desire to explore his new home by bicycle, and travel to different exotic places he never imagined possible while living in DC. Equipped with his trustee bicycle Sunship, and an intense desire to explore places near and far, he travels up and down the coast challenging himself physically and mentally, visiting some of the most beautiful sites on the southern California coast. The journey is multidimensional, though, as his quest for personal development is interrupted by an unexpected presence, Juliana, who needs his help to save her dying planet. With this background, Dillon continues his journey while helping and hurting Juliana’s quest. The solution to her dilemma is more complicated than expected, interacting with Dillon’s academic successes, and numerous dating failures. With unexpected twists and curious adventures on both coasts, The Voyage of the Sunship takes the reader through Dillon’s often bizarre experiences and the many interesting people he meets, as it delves deeply into the psychology of developmental change in the life of a young adult with a desire to live a not common life.
