Abstract
Negative health impacts of caregiving for a person with dementia are well established, and placing a person with dementia in a residential care facility may become a necessary option. The decision to place a spouse with dementia in a residential care facility, and the difficult relational dynamics that can result, is one of the most significant periods that a support group can help a caregiver navigate. This case study focuses on support group interactions during a caregiver’s decision-making process and her experience moving her spouse to a residential care facility. The potential for social support to mediate negative health impacts is discussed.
