As humans we have the unique ability to construct and make sense of our lives and social interactions by the use of language. Language permits humans to engage in abstract thought, i.e., to generalize, distinguish, analyze and hypothesize. Without language, we would not have the ability to understand history. That is, we would not be able to access our development and our contributions throughout history.

World History Dictionary: A Student Guide was designed with the student in mind. Beginning undergraduate students are typically unfamiliar with the history of western civilization or world history. This book provides them with a comprehensive but concise alphabetical list of events, people, processes and ideas bearing on the facts of what happened and, more importantly, why. When the definitions and explanations in this book are integrated into classroom lectures and discussions, the students are enabled to become active class participants and to critically analyze and interpret the course material.

Curriculum Vitae

From the first words of the dedication to the last definition, the World History Dictionary is a complete guide throughout history from the beginning events to the one’s we deal with today.  The World History Dictionary is a great tool for all college students, who take any history classes now or in the future.  For those students like myself who love history the book provides an in depth analysis to past historical events that help you understand what happened and gives you greater knowledge to prepare for future exams.  The book is a tool that guides you through the class; it’s a reference to help you understand terms and events that you don’t know.  The best part of the dictionary is that it is written by Professor Meyrowitz, a man who truly loves history and his profession.  As a college student who plans to go into teaching history, I am grateful to have The World History Dictionary moving forward, and hopefully using it teaching classes in the future.
Michael Sanko, Student

I have taken several history classes with Dr. Meyrowitz and I cannot say enough about the World History Dictionary.  I have found it  to be an invaluable resource for myself as well as the students for classes they are taking.  It consists of very concise and comprehensive information, that allows the students to access information as it pertains to their history lessons.  Not only did it help me prepare me for class materials, it also helped a great deal when preparing for an exam.   Even though I no longer am taking history classes, I still utilize the dictionary.  This dictionary has also been useful to my son while he was in high school and I imagine it will still be helpful to my granddaughter who will be entering high school in the fall.
Pamela A. Williams

I have used the The World History Dictionary alongside both textbooks and secondary sources, where it has proven to be especially useful since many of these sources contain no glossary. When reading through a 600 page book on Soviet history, it is much easier to pick up the Dictionary and read the entry on the Five-Year Plans than it is to go to the index of the book, deduce which form of the term you are looking for, find the pages that contain the term, and then read through those pages to find what you need. This anecdote (I have actually done that for a class before) helps to illustrate perhaps the most useful aspect of the book, it’s versatility. The book is wonderful for World and Western Civilization history courses, but it is also a great companion for any and all history courses due to the wide variety of terms included. I would highly recommend the World History Dictionary to anyone taking a history course, regardless of the time period or geographic location cover.
Alex Votta

This book helped provide a more complete understanding of the terms studied throughout my history courses. The definitions in the book go into greater detail and provide more context than the textbook's definition. In my time using the book, I was always able to find the word I was looking for, and the definitions are easy to understand. While taking professor Meyrowitzes' classes the terms and definitions were read out loud by a student to introduce a class discussion and to further explain a concept we were learning about. This allowed students to discuss the concept more confidently, and students were more likely to participate in class discussions. Overall, the World History Dictionary allowed me to better understand ideas, rather than simply memorizing definitions. This has helped improve my grades in other history classes, and I intend to use it in the future.
Emily Reeves

I love my World History Dictionary! The definitions are not only clear and concise, but truly help me understand the literature and lectures to a higher degree. I would be lost without my dictionary. I have even been able to use it for other classes in addition to my history courses, as there are a plethora of vocabulary available.  It helps me be the best student I can be!
Jesika Parra

World History Dictionary helps better my understanding of events and terms used throughout history. I feel like the book is definitely comprehensive and concise because it allows for a way of understanding events that aren't found in any regular dictionary and it also allows for better understanding of what is meant by certain terms that have been used throughout history. I have used the dictionary for more than just history classes as well. I feel as though this dictionary helped me to understand and interpret materials that the course text book otherwise did not. The student guide for sure does help to prepare for examinations that are taken in the history course. Using the dictionary helped me get better grades, as I had a clear understanding of what we were going over. I can honestly say this dictionary is one of VERY, VERY few that I have kept regardless of taking further history courses. I would recommend it to any one that is planning to take history at any college level.
Taylor Kennaugh

Dr. Meyrowtiz’s World History Dictionary is an indispensable study resource for individuals who are taking college level World or European History courses and are having difficulty grasping the complex historical themes, figures, and ideas these courses pose to the student. Definitions are written in a clear, concise, and simple manner that allows even beginning novices with little background in history to read, understand, and learn historical concepts. I highly recommend purchasing this book as it is a great complement to any World or European History course textbook.
Nicholas James, former student

The World History Dictionary by Lee Meyrowitz serves as a invaluable tool in class. It helps break down complex concepts and ideas into easily read and understood terms, that make understanding the lessons much simpler. The terms used in the classroom are always readily available inside the book and using the dictionary helps greatly with both class discussion and with exams. It proves to be a valuable resource whether this is your first history class since high school or you are a long term student of history.
William Ballew

In every history class that I have taken with Dr. Meyrowitz, rythe World History Dictionary has been an invaluable resource. The terms included are clearly defined and cover a range of subjects that have been covered in the classes I have taken. The book itself was my most reliable study tool, offering an efficient way of creating an overview of important themes, events, and people covered in lectures and textbooks. The definitions themselves were concise, yet thorough, and easily led to a progression of definitions that created a more well-rounded understanding of the original term I had looked up. This book has been the single most useful resource in each and every history class I have taken since I purchased it.
