A World Onstage: An Introduction to the Art Form of Live Theatre explores the rich tradition of theatre, designed in an engaging and approachable manner for students new to the art form. Divided into five course sections, complete with exercises and formative assignments, A World Onstage examines theatre from diverse and dynamic perspectives. The first section, “Curtain Up,” defines and introduces theatre first through a historical lens, ranging from Ancient Greek to Avant-Garde theatre; “At the Theatre” then articulates theatre spaces and the audience experience. Part Three, “Leading Players,” surveys the roles of designers, technicians, performers, playwrights, and directors in mounting a production; “Encore Performances” expands student understanding by introducing additional jobs in theatre, Theatre for Social Change, youth theatre, diversity in theatre, and Eastern Theatre. Finally, “On with the Show” provides a culminating opportunity to synthesize course knowledge in the analysis of a live theatre production.
