An Ideal Package for a Two-Semester Beginning Spanish Course!

Yo Soy Así is a unique teaching and learning tool. At first sight it looks like many other Spanish textbooks, but when you start working with it, you begin to realize that it is amazingly different from other Spanish textbooks. Yo Soy Así takes the learner as the starting point and as the very objective of each lesson. This textbook is for them and about them. Language is incidental to the student’s desire to express himself and to describe his or her characteristics, personality, interests, and everyday life. It relies upon the skills of the instructor to start conversations among students about them.  It allows the instructor to model the appropriate communicative style using monologues and dialogue for different life circumstances. The vocabulary was designed to be flexible and adaptable reflecting the preferences of the student. Grammar is presented as structures on which we place words to describe our thoughts and experiences, not as rules to be memorized for their own sake.  The context is contemporary introducing students to life as it is actually lived in various Spanish speaking regions and countries, including the United States. The cultural content has been gleaned from inter-cultural training exercises prepared for American professionals who have been given an expatriate assignment in a Spanish speaking country. The ethnographic approach to its cultural content makes it realistic, up-to-date and useful. The textbook is supplemented with a comprehensive set of online exercises, most of which are self-correcting providing students with immediate feed-back, while providing instructors with an online homework monitoring system, and an online grade book for their convenience.

Yo Soy Así is a student-centered elementary Spanish textbook for English speaking college students. It provides students with a variety of correct models, which he/she can imitate through a number of drills on Maple T.A. These drills are designed for repetition, recognition, individual production and thoughtful reproduction or adaptation.

Yo Soy Así assists the instructor in fulfilling three primary teaching responsibilities:

  • Modeling providing examples
  • Coordinating learning activities
  • Evaluating progress

Yo Soy Así features:

  • year-long access to online homework.
  • specially designed exercises used to acquire syntax and morphology.
  • situational learning within real cultural settings to enable students to emote in the target language at the proper stimuli.
  • numerous exercises and activities that facilitate a group-work approach both in the text and on the accompanying website.
  • elements necessary to interest students in the variety of cultures existing in the Spanish speaking world.
  • References to existing web sites, interesting movies, and absorbing readings that will familiarize students with El Mundo Hispano.
