The applied engineering experiments in this book are designed to cover some fundamental hands-on skills in engineering practice. Topics include metrology for dimensional and temperature measurements, properties and behavior of solid materials, properties and behavior of fluids, and product design and prototype. These experiments will help students transform the meaning of science and engineering principles into understanding and apply them in hands-on activities. Some engineering experiments reflect the most recent development in science and engineering, such as infrared thermometry and additive manufacturing (or 3D printing). In each chapter, the experiment information is presented in a concise manner. It also provides theories or background information for the experiment as addendums. Practical guides are also provided to help student prepare their experimental reports.

Aixi Zhou

AIXI ZHOU is Professor and Chair in the Department of Applied Engineering Technology at North Carolina A&T State University. Prior to this appointment, he held positions at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), and the University of California at San Diego. His research interests and publications are in the areas of fire protection, engineering materials and structures, manufacturing, and engineering education. Prof. Zhou is the Principal Investigator (PI) or co-PI for over 20 funded research projects. He is the author or co-author of more than 100 technical publications. Dr. Zhou is a licensed Professional Engineer. He is a Fellow of SFPE. He serves as a Commissioner in the Engineering Accreditation Commission at ABET.

Prof. Zhou is an advocate for hands-on and application-oriented engineering education. He is the author of textbooks Applied Engineering Experiments and Advanced Engineering Experiments, both published by Kendall Hunt.
