Addressing Diversity with First-Year Students

With Martin Luther King Jr. Day falling in January, the topic of diversity often becomes more paramount in the minds of educators. I’d like to take this opportunity to describe how the topic of diversity is addressed in our book for first-year students, Thriving in College & Beyond: Research-Based Strategies for Academic Success and Personal Development.

Dr. Lewis is currently an Associate Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP). Prior to joining the faculty at IUP in 2007, Dr. Lewis was a member of the faculty at the University of Southern Mississippi for three years. He was a  Faculty Fellow at the John P. Murtha Institute for Homeland Security and just recently was the Interim Director of the Criminal Justice Training Center, both at IUP. Prior to beginning his academic career, for 23 years, Dr. Lewis worked in law enforcement.

San Bolkan (Ph.D., University of Texas at Austin, 2007) is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at California State University, Long Beach. His research has been published widely and covers subjects related to instructional communication including topics such as teacher clarity, student motivation, and transformational leadership in the classroom.
