Gwendolyn Dordick, PhD

Gwendolyn Dordick, PhD is a Doctoral Lecturer at the City College of New York, (CUNY) where she offers courses in urban sociology and urban homelessness and social policy in the U.S. Her book, Something Left to Lose: Personal Relations and Survival among New York's Homeless, concerns the efforts made by four groups of homeless people in New York City to construct shelter in places where it was not meant to be and is based on extensive ethnographic fieldwork. Her research also explores the economics of panhandling and the development of policies addressing panhandling.

Catherine White Berheide

Catherine White Berheide holds the Tisch Family Distinguished Professorship at Skidmore College. She received the American Sociological Association Section on Teaching and Learning Hans O. Mauksch Award for Distinguished Contributions to Undergraduate Education in 2003. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has twice named her a Carnegie Scholar. A sociologist of work, she currently teaches courses on gender, families, and work.

James Biles

James Biles is a faculty member at The City College of New York and the CUNY Graduate Center. As an economic geographer, his research focuses on the confluence of global economic processes, policy and local livelihoods. In light of the deep-seated changes in the role of government and market forces in the context of neoliberalism, his work attempts to incorporate the experiences of those excluded from prevailing models of development while highlighting agency – the place-specific practices and strategies that people adopt for the purposes of improving well-being.
